How to keep your passwords safe on iPhone

Check Security in the Passwords app, replace anything leaked or weak with a strong password, use passkeys where you can, and turn on Stolen Device Protection.

iOS 18 or later · 10 minutes

  1. See what's at risk

Open the Passwords app and tap Security. It lists passwords that were leaked, reused or are easy to guess. Start with the leaked ones.

  3. Use passkeys

When a site offers a passkey, accept it. You sign in with Face ID, and there's no password that can leak.

  4. Protect them if your phone is stolen

Turn on Stolen Device Protection. Away from home, your saved passwords then need Face ID, not just your passcode.

Questions

How do I know if a password leaked?

The Passwords app lists it under Security. In Pond, Depth shows it at the top once breach checking is on.

Is it safe to save passwords on iPhone?

Yes, in a password manager that's locked with Face ID.

What is a passkey?

A sign-in that replaces a password. It stays on your devices and you unlock it with Face ID, so there's nothing to steal from a website.
