How to check if your passwords have leaked

In Pond, turn on breach checking in Settings › Privacy & Security, then tap your Depth score on the Vault tab. The password to change first is at the top.

  1. Turn on breach checking

    In Pond, go to Settings › Privacy & Security and turn on Breach checking. It stays off until you choose it.

  2. Open Depth

    Tap the score at the top of the Vault tab. Depth is one number out of 100 for how safe your accounts are.

  3. Fix the one at the top

    Depth puts the password that matters most first: leaked, reused or easy to guess. Tap Change it, update it on the website, and watch the score rise.

  4. Hear when one leaks

    Allow notifications for Pond. You'll hear when a saved password turns up in a new breach, or a site you use has one.

  5. Check any password

    To test a password before you use it, go to Tools › Check a password. The check runs on your iPhone.

What's sent

Only the first five characters of a scrambled copy (a SHA-1 hash) of each password go to Have I Been Pwned. The comparison happens on your iPhone, and your passwords never leave it.

Leaked doesn't mean hacked

A leaked password appeared in a breach somewhere. Change it everywhere you used it.

Questions

Does Pond send my passwords anywhere?

No. Only the first five characters of each password's hash are sent, and they match hundreds of other passwords.

What is Have I Been Pwned?

A free, widely used service that collects published breach data. Pond credits it under its CC BY 4.0 licence.

How often does it check?

From time to time in the background, while breach checking and leak alerts are on.
